What thoughts arise when encountering someone with an intellectual and developmental disability (IDD)? Have you pondered how to interact with them? Humans tend to notice differences, but accepting them as natural diversity fosters inclusion. An IDD is a natural variation in how brains function. However, societal constructs around normality and disability can inadvertently create barriers and misconceptions, making us uncomfortable addressing these topics openly.
